One improvement currently under way is the demolition of the batting cages. The machines have been out of order for the past few years. Removal started on Thursday July 22, 2010. In its place will be a wiffleball stadium. This stadium will showcase the iconic wall of "The Green Monster" of Fenway Park home to the Boston Red Sox's. Our Green Monster will be 30 feet long and stand 12ft high. From home plate to reach the Green Monster you have to hit the ball down the left field foul line 45ft away and to its deepest part 69ft. While that doesn't seem far away try hitting a wiffleball from 42ft away with a skilled pitcher reaching the equivalent of a 95mph major league fastball. Lets not forget a wiffleball rarely goes straight. A skilled pitcher can throw nasty sliders, risers, curveballs that drop off the table and late breaking sinkers.
This game will take you back to the fun summers playing pick up ball with the neighborhood kids. No running bases will be necessary when you play this blast from the past. All you need is a roster of 3 players with a maximum of 5. Our league will incorporate "over the line" style of play but with a few defensive twists.
How is the game played? Seven innings with 3 outs per half inning. There will be a tin strike zone for the pitcher to throw to. No matter how close the ball comes to you, if the pitcher can make the ball curve back into the tin, strike one! The sound of the tin never lies, this feature is better than instant replay. Defensively you can turn double plays by fielding the ball cleanly and in one step attempt to hit the tin strike zone to get two outs. Offensively, you can tag a runner on third base by yelling "tag" on a fly ball. The defender has to make the catch and with one step throw the ball to the tin in order to throw the runner out at the plate. Sound interesting and fun to try? You bet! There is more about this competitive game of wiffleball to come!
Do you have what it takes to hit it over the Green Monster? Can you be the next Cy Young pitcher to learn and dominate the wiffleball game? League leader stats and awards will be given at the end of each season.
Leagues and tournaments will begin in September. We are now taking league sign ups. Call Lou for complete details 744-9496 or sign up online.
